We get it—dog training takes time, patience, and consistency. But over the years, we’ve heard some pretty wild excuses from dog owners trying to dodge training sessions.
While we always encourage proper training (for your dog’s sake AND your sanity), we can’t help but laugh at some of these creative reasons people give for skipping out.
Here are some of the funniest excuses we’ve encountered—have you used any of these?
“He already knows how to get away with everything.” Some owners insist their dog is so intelligent that training is unnecessary—until their “genius” pup is stealing food off the counter and ignoring every recall command. Smart dogs still need guidance… and boundaries!
Rest assured, proper training won’t turn your fun-loving pup into a lifeless robot. In fact, dogs thrive on structure and knowing what’s expected of them! A well-trained dog is a confident and happy dog.
A classic! Many people believe their dog is just “untrainable,” but more often than not, it’s the human who needs to learn better communication techniques. A “stubborn” dog is usually just one that isn’t being motivated the right way!
Ah, the selective listener! This isn’t a dog problem—it’s a training consistency problem. If your dog only listens when they want to, it means they’ve learned that obedience is optional.
We totally understand wanting to be gentle with a rescue dog. But structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement actually help them feel safe and secure in their new home.
Not every viral dog training hack is one-size-fits-all. Every dog learns differently, and just because something worked for a Labrador in a 30-second clip doesn’t mean it’ll work for your Chihuahua.
This is wishful thinking at its finest! Puppies don’t magically become well-behaved adults without guidance. That cute little jumping habit? It’s not so cute when your 80-pound dog is knocking over guests.
The truth is, training doesn’t have to take hours each day! Even just a few minutes of consistent practice goes a long way. Plus, an untrained dog tends to take up MORE of your time dealing with their misbehavior.
So is a toddler, but that doesn’t mean we let them run into traffic. Freedom is great—but it’s safest when paired with solid training and a reliable recall!
Dogs bark, jump, chew, and dig—it’s true! But training teaches them when and where those behaviors are appropriate. If “just being a dog” means chaos in your home, some training can make life easier for both of you.
If any of these sound familiar, don’t worry—we’ve all been there! The good news? It’s never too late to start training. Whether your dog is a young pup or a seasoned senior, consistent, balanced training makes a world of difference. Need help? Contact us today to set your dog up for success!
